Coventry University chosen to prepare Indonesian academics for PhD studies

Coventry University is the only UK higher education institution selected by the Indonesian Ministry for Higher Education, Research and Technology to deliver a doctoral bridging programme preparing the country’s higher education academics for PhD studies.

The initiative will bring a cohort of candidates - all academics at higher education institutions across Indonesia - to Coventry University for an eight-week programme. They will develop essential research skills and knowledge in advance of their doctoral studies, which are set to begin in September 2025.

The participants will benefit from research skills training, research proposal development, meetings with supervisors, library induction sessions and PhD application development support. They will also gain insights into life as a PhD student in the UK through a peer ‘buddy’ system.

Coventry University’s Doctoral College provides a home and community to more than 800 postgraduate researchers, providing them with comprehensive training and development as part of the university’s investment in interdisciplinary research that tackles some of society's major challenges.

This programme builds on the success of previous years with the university having led similar initiatives in 2017, 2018 and 2019, supporting the Ministry’s goals of developing highly skilled researchers in Indonesia.

Professor Richard Dashwood, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Coventry University, said: “We are incredibly proud to be the only UK university selected by the Ministry to lead the doctoral bridging programme this year. Our strong, long-standing relationship with Indonesia enables us to support the next generation of Indonesian researchers, contributing to a global network of academic collaboration and research excellence.”

Dr Lukman, Director for Higher Education Resources, Indonesian Ministry, said: "This Bridging Programme is our commitment to enhance the quality of our academics. It is also a proof that we value the collaboration with our strategic partners like Coventry University in our endeavours of accelerating quality human resources."

Through this initiative Coventry University is expanding its global outreach and enhancing international collaborations, building on its existing network of Global Hubs in India, China, Africa, Brussels and Singapore and working with universities and organisations worldwide.
